TJ 4.0L Timing Chain Replacement

By Mike Forbes

Step 3:  Using a 19mm socket and a large breaker bar break free the crankshaft bolt.  I have a manual transmission, so I just put the jeep in gear with the parking brake on.  It broke free rather easily.

Step 4:  Drain the radiator.

Step 5:  Remove the water pump, thermostat, and radiator hoses.  Refer to the water pump/thermostat replacement write-up.

Step 6:  Remove the radiator by removing the 4 10mm bolts, 2 on each side.  I found a deep well worked well, a regular socket with an extension would have worked as well.

Step 7:  Using a 1/2 inch breaker bar insert the bar into the belt tensioner and remove the belt while levering the breaker bar to relieve tension.
