If you have ever spent time at a firearms training facility where your favorite 9mm, .40, or .45 pistol consumes hundreds of rounds per day (yes, it is fun!), you might remember how your thumb felt after stuffing rounds into your regular or high capacity magazines. (If you haven't been to a good handgun training facility yet, put it at the top of your list!) Stuffing .45 ACP cartridges into my 10 and 13 round XD45 magazines is a bit more challenging after the third box of ammo. Of course, then the entire things starts again tomorrow....except now just getting the first box loaded is becoming a challenge (we won't talk about days 3 and 4).
My first trip to Front Sight with my XD45 taught me the value of a magazine loader. I used the loader that came with my XD. It did the job but shortly after that trip, my shooting buddy introduced me to the UpLULA magazine loader that he used for his Rock River and Kimber 1911 .45s. I was pretty impressed with how it handled the rounds. Friends being friends, he gave me one for a Christmas present.
Let's see how it works.....
This model works with both single and double stack magazines. With the loader slipped over the magazine such that the steel "beak" points towards the front/bullet side of the magazine, place the bottom of the magazine on a support (tables, bumpers, Jeep fenders, etc. work well). You can even use your leg if there is nothing nearby that has a hard flat surface.
Fully close (squeeze it shut) the loader and place the tip of
the beak over the magazine's follower. Press down with the loader until it
stops.....this will depress the follower and move it out of the way.
Place the cartridge into the loader. It will lay right on top of the beak.
Simultaneously raise the UpLULA (release your downward pressure) and loosen your grip on the loader (allowing it to push open). Congrats, you have a fresh round loaded in the magazine.
Squeeze the loader shut, again.....push the loader down as you previously did, which will now push the just loaded round down into the magazine.
Place another cartridge into the loader, positioned directly
over the beak. It should literally slide into position without any
assistance from you.
Once again, simultaneously raise the UpLULA (release your downward pressure) and loosen your grip on the loader (allowing it to push open). Congrats, you have a another round loaded in the magazine.
You will find that you can easily develop a rhythm which allows
you to load a round per second. That means it takes about 10~15 seconds to
load a magazine.....and without your thumbs and fingers getting cramps,
markets the UpLULA magazine loader here in
the states. They offer a variety of models which should work with just
about any magazine you might have.
